Mother of PND Founder, Alaskan Civil Rights Leader Honored on US Coin

Post Date:06/26/2017 12:00 PM

Elizabeth Peratrovich, mother of Roy Peratrovich - one of PND’s founders - was an Alaska Native civil rights leader. The Department of the Treasury is finalizing the design for a new $1 coin featuring Mrs. Peratrovich. It will be released in 2020 through the Native American $1 Coin Program.

Throughout her life, Elizabeth Peratrovich was an advocate for the equal rights of Alaska Natives and she was integral in the passing of the Alaska Anti-Discrimination Act. This landmark act was enacted nearly two decades before US Congress passed the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

"Elizabeth and Roy Peratrovich [Sr.] stood up to fight the unfair, inhumane, and degrading treatment of Alaska Native Peoples, and their efforts towards positive change reverberate to this day," Walker said in a press release. "This honor is truly deserved."
