Building Structural Engineering

Commercial & Public Buildings

PND’s structural engineers provide comprehensive structural engineering services to owners and architects on a wide variety of commercial, institutional, and industrial buildings. Our structural services include designing new structures; inspecting new construction; evaluating existing facilities by inspecting existing conditions; assessing the conditions; performing Tier I and Tier II Seismic Evaluation of Existing Buildings in accordance with ASCE 31; and designing retrofits, repairs, and improvements to existing structures and facilities.

Oftentimes, PND building projects are subject to the severe loading unique to arctic and coastal locations. High seismic loads, high snow loads with sliding and drifting accumulation, high velocity winds at exposed locations, and low temperature environments are design criteria that we deal with on a routine basis. We understand and design effective foundation systems for frozen soils and soils around buildings subject to freezing.

Many of our projects are in remote locations and the construction of those facilities requires unique design and construction approaches. Where weather conditions may shorten the construction schedule or prohibit time consuming on-site labor during construction, PND engineers have developed plans that maximize shop fabrication and reduce on-site labor. At remote sites, alternate construction methods, such as pre-mixing and bagging concrete aggregates for field mixing in concrete trucks, are employed. Such methods are typically not common to large population centers. Varying foundation conditions across a remote project site requires unique approaches to which PND engineers have developed unique and cost-effective solutions.

The linked pages display the kinds of buildings and individual projects for which PND has provided structural engineering services.
