PND has provided structural engineering for Borough and Municipality school projects throughout Alaska. Each project in Alaska presents unique engineering challenges, from extreme snow loads and high seismic and wind loads to construction on permafrost in remote locations. PND is well versed in challenging aspects of school construction from long span gymnasiums and auditoriums to elevated running tracks, and analysis for walking-induced floor vibrations.
We work closely with our clients to identify the best framing and lateral resisting system for each project. We have utilized braced frames, moment frames, steel plate shear walls, and buckling restrained braced frames to maintain architecturally open floor plans and provide needed clearances and corridors for mechanical and electrical equipment.
Additionally, we provide full structural evaluation of existing school facilities and assist our clients in developing economical retrofits to meet updated code requirements.
