Structural Engineering

PND has a staff of qualified building/structural engineers available to provide structural design services to architects, industrial designers and planners, and local government clients. Our engineers routinely design for the severe environmental loadings required for projects in Alaska and other far-north climates, including high seismic forces; high snowloads with drifting and falling snow; and high wind speeds at exposed locations. We design structural systems in structural steel, reinforced concrete, timber, concrete masonry, and aluminum, all in accordance with national standards. Due to the high number of projects in remote and inclement locations, our designs routinely stress that construction have more shop fabrication and less field fabrication. This ensures that the quality of construction is better controlled and that construction time in extreme weather conditions is limited.

PND’s structural engineers perform condition inspections and assessments on a routine basis. Inspections include entering all accessible spaces, removing finishes, and assessing the condition of structural members. These inspections not only identify the condition of the structures but evaluate compliance with current codes. We routinely provide Tier I and Tier II analyses of buildings in accordance with the Seismic Evaluation of Existing Buildings (ASCE 41).
